HARVESTING THE

FRUITS OF LABOR

September 2020

Wow. Can you believe it’s already September?

At its heart, sustainable farming is about stewardship of earth’s ecosystem, the interconnectedness of land, animals and people that leads to health and abundance. Nature is the ultimate teacher on the path to balance, and as simple as it sounds, that path begins with water.

As we prepare for fall on the farm, we are thankful for the bounty summer has brought. We saw the fruits of our labor blossom into a thriving and harmonious ecosystem. Our water retention landscaping yielded our greenest pastures yet. We celebrated the births of many piglets and calves including our first Scottish Highland/Dexter cow mix, an adorable bull calf named Alia.

As the summer season draws to a close, we’re busy harvesting the wild apples and plums our hogs will enjoy. Just as grapes absorb the unique characteristics of the land on which they are grown, the spring grasses, wildflowers, truffles, fresh fruit and falling acorns our hogs savor contribute to the deliciously unique flavor of our pastured meats. Terroir is definitely not just for wine.

The lush green grass is yellow now. We moved into what we call mob grazing, allowing the cows to trample down that tall yellow grass which makes it biodegrade faster. The quicker that happens the quicker the soil builds up and the lusher next year’s pastures will be.

We’re also laying down hay in strips throughout the pasture, mulching for next year as well as providing protection for the seeds we plant in the fall. The twenty tons of hay we harvested this summer is coming in handy as we do this and as we make the barns cozy for our animals during the winter season.

In a time of uncertainty, embracing the natural rhythms of nature brings a certain peace, a confidence in the cycle of life and an optimism that comes when we cultivate harmony.

Thank you for following Tabula Rasa Farms. As we move closer to our upcoming December pork harvest, we will be introducing a new curated box format. No more confusing hanging weights. Just the flavorful cuts you want and love. More information will follow on that in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we hope you’ll add your name to our pork waitlist by emailing [email protected].
